Our 100+ members create opportunities for every home, car and business to support a reliable and decarbonised EU energy system by activating their demand-side flexibility.

smartEn is recruiting a Membership & Business Development Officer to strengthen and expand our growing network of member companies from across Europe. This role is central to ensuring our members are fully engaged, supported, and represented while also developing strategic partnerships that enhance smartEn’s visibility, impact, and financial sustainability.

You will be part of a dynamic, professional, international team in the EU area in Brussels and will work in strong cooperation with our broad membership of engaged companies.

Main responsibilities

  • Serve as the main point of contact for members, ensuring high-quality services, timely support, and proactive communication.
  • Engage closely with members to understand their challenges and demonstrate how smartEn can provide value.
  • Identify and recruit new members by monitoring sector developments and mapping key industry players.
  • Ensure a smooth and welcoming onboarding process for new members.
  • Maintain and update the membership and contacts database, track engagement metrics, and monitor projected income and membership-related financials.
  • Lead on membership-oriented communications materials and newsletters.
  • Support the diversification of smartEn’s revenue streams through innovative partnership models.
  • Design and manage sponsorship and partnership packages for events, publications, and projects.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of smartEn’s flagship events, workshops, and conferences.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with partners, sponsors, and allies to strengthen smartEn’s visibility and influence.

Desired skills and experience

  • A university degree (Master or equivalent) in business, marketing, communications, or similar.
  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience in a similar position.
  • Excellent relationship-building and communication skills, with a strong service-oriented mindset.
  • Experience in developing and managing partnerships, including sponsorships and funding agreements.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • A start-up mentality with a flair for the creative on how to champion businesses in the FDMI.
  • A team-player, collaborative mindset with good networking and communication skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required, other European languages are an asset.
  • EU citizenship/working permit and based in, or willing to move to, Brussels.
  • Knowledge of the FDMI is a bonus but not required.
