Position Paper | The contribution of Demand Side Flexibility to EU Competitiveness and Affordability

Geopolitical uncertainties, surging energy costs, and the clean energy transition are shaping the early months of the new EU legislature. As the European Commission sharpens its focus on industrial competitiveness and energy affordability, smartEn highlights the pivotal role of the Flexible Demand Management Industry (FDMI)in achieving both objectives.

By activating flexible electricity consumption, demand-side flexibility helps lower energy prices, and reduce system costs, but also empowers consumers – from households to energy-intensive industries – to reduce expenses and generate additional revenue. However, unlocking these benefits fully requires FDMI’s formal recognition as a clean tech sector.

This position paper presents strategic policy recommendations for the Affordable Energy Action Plan and the Clean Industrial Deal, outlining measures to ensure a competitive and cost-effective clean energy transition.
