The European Union is at a pivotal moment. Deployment of decentralized energy resources and smart electrification of consumption are the strategic solutions to overcome the current crisis. European consumers should be at the heart of this strategy and their active participation would lead to a more efficient, reliable and secure energy system.
The Electricity Market Design sets crucial rules to remove barriers to consumers' empowerment and demand-side flexibility. However, more than two years after its adoption, its implementation is lagging behind.
The ‘Fit for 55’ package should build on and complement the solid market design rules. It represents Europe’s opportunity to scale up demand-side flexibility by transforming buildings, industries and vehicles into flexible assets, while rewarding their contribution to the energy system in order to increase energy system efficiency and resiliency.
The hosting MEP Christophe Grudler, Commissioner Simson and Laurent Michel, DG of the French Directorate General for Energy and Climate, will exchange on the opportunities and challenges – beyond the implementation of the Electricity Market Design – for unleashing the demand-side flexibility potential of all end-users.
This event aims to shed light on the synergies between these two regulatory frameworks and is the perfect occasion to inform the ‘Fit for 55’ package negotiations, mapping out the next steps to ramp up the activation and integration of distributed flexibility into the power system.
smartEn will present the main conclusions of the second edition of its Electricity Market Design Implementation report, elaborated with the support of its network of member companies and which monitors progress in over 10 Member States in removing barriers to demand-side flexibility.
